Periodic inspections & technical reports
Inspections are how you know what condition your crane is really in. The Zella Cranes service team checks mechanical, electrical and safety systems on site and documents everything in written reports.

What we inspect
Inspections combine visual examination with functional testing under real operating conditions:
- Structure: girders, end carriages and connections for cracks, weld separation, permanent deformation, paint flaking and loose fasteners
- Runways: structural damage or distortion of the crane runways and rails
- Hoisting group: sheaves, drums and wire rope for evident damage or excessive wear; chains and hook blocks with their safety latches
- Brakes: hoist and travel brakes, braking action and hold under load
- Limit switches and safety devices: end-travel limits, overload protection, emergency stops
- Electrical system: control panels, cabling, radio remote controls, indicators
- Travel behaviour: wheels, buffers, alignment over the full runway
Method and tools
Our technicians work from a dedicated inspection manual containing the technical instructions and regulatory references for each machine family. Wire rope condition is assessed against recognized discard criteria (ISO 4309), chain slings per EN 818-7, hooks per the applicable standards, and the overall inspection practice follows the guidance of ISO 9927-1 for crane inspections. Aerial work platforms are used where needed to examine runways and structures at height, so no area of the crane goes unseen.
Written reports, in line with applicable norms
Every inspection ends with a formal report, completed and delivered after each visit: the equipment examined, the checks carried out, the anomalies found with their severity, and the recommended corrective actions. Reports are issued in English and Italian, and the whole inspection history of each device is kept — so anomalies can be tracked over time and addressed before they become failures, and the documentation is ready whenever a verification body or auditor asks for it.
Maintenance controls and statutory verifications: the difference
Italian rules distinguish two different activities. The periodic and extraordinary controls carried out by competent personnel — on initial installation, at intervals, and after important repairs or modifications — belong to the equipment owner's upkeep obligations, and results must be recorded in writing and kept available. Separately, lifting equipment is subject to a statutory periodic verification with the frequency established for its class in Annex VII of Legislative Decree 81/2008: the first verification is performed by INAIL, subsequent ones by the ASL/ARPA or by subjects authorized for this purpose.
The information on these pages describes Zella Cranes' services and summarizes the general regulatory framework for workplace lifting equipment in Italy. It is provided for orientation only and does not constitute legal advice; obligations for specific equipment depend on its characteristics and use.
