Maintenance and controls: what the law requires
Italian workplace-safety rules set a clear framework for lifting equipment. Understanding who does what helps you plan service before problems stop production.
- 01
Maintenance, always
Work equipment must be kept efficient and safe through adequate maintenance, following the manufacturer's instructions and retaining the maintenance booklet. Where required, a control register must be kept up to date.
- 02
Controls by competent personnel
Equipment is subject to an initial control after installation, and to periodic and extraordinary controls carried out by competent personnel — inside the company or by an external technical partner. Results must be recorded in writing and kept available.
- 03
Statutory periodic verification
Lifting equipment such as bridge cranes, jib cranes and monorails (non-manually operated, capacity above 200 kg) is subject to statutory periodic verification under Article 71 of Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008, with the frequency set for each equipment class in Annex VII — for lifting equipment, generally annual. The first verification is performed by INAIL; subsequent ones by the local health authority (ASL/ARPA) or by subjects authorized for this purpose.
Frequently asked questions
How often should an overhead crane be serviced?
There is no single interval for every crane. Maintenance frequency follows the manufacturer's instructions, adjusted for how intensively the crane is used, the working environment and its age. What the law fixes is the framework: adequate maintenance at all times, periodic and extraordinary controls by competent personnel, and the statutory periodic verification of lifting equipment with the frequency established for its class.
Who performs the statutory verification of a bridge crane?
The statutory periodic verification is performed by INAIL (first verification) and afterwards by the local health authority (ASL/ARPA) or by subjects authorized for this purpose. It is distinct from ordinary maintenance and from the periodic controls that competent personnel carry out as part of equipment upkeep.
What parts of a crane need the most attention?
The components whose wear or failure most directly affects safety: ropes, chains and hooks, brakes, limit switches and safety devices, wheels and runways, and the electrical control system. These are the areas our inspections and maintenance programmes concentrate on.
When is a load test useful?
After a new installation or a major repair or modification, after long periods out of service, or whenever there are doubts about the condition or capacity of the equipment. A load test verifies behaviour under load with test weights and documents the result.
Do you provide written reports?
Yes. Every inspection, maintenance intervention and load test is documented in a written report, so that maintenance history is traceable and available when verifications or audits require it.
Are reports and documents available in English?
Yes. Technical reports are issued in both English and Italian — useful for international organizations and for plants with mixed-language staff. The complete inspection history of each device is kept, and documentation can use SI or US units.
